Dr. M. Thomas Propes returns to his native South Georgia to serve as the State Overseer, effective August 2026.

Dr. Propes' life and ministry began in our region. A fourth-generation member of the Church of God, he gave his life to the Lord at the tender age of 5. He began his ministry in 1977 and was ordained in 1984.

He comes to South Georgia after serving the past 14 years at Church of God headquarters, including the past four as General Director of World Missions. He also served as Assistant Director of World Missions and as Secretary-General of the International Executive Committee.

Propes’ pastorates include Jesup Church of God (Sunset Boulevard) in Jesup, Georgia and Live Oak in Hinesville, Georgia. He served as state overseer of the Great Lakes Region, Northern Ohio, and South Carolina. He was appointed as General Director of Publications at Pathway Press in 2004. From 2008 to 2012, Propes was elected to and served on the Council of Eighteen of the Church of God and from 2012 to 2016 as a member of the International Executive Committee, serving as Secretary General.

Dr. Propes holds a Doctor of Divinity from Pentecostal Theological Seminary, a Master of Religious Education from Trinity Theological Seminary, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Christian Education from Lee University.

His experience covers a wide range of committees and boards as well as professional and civic activities. Additionally, he is a contributing writer to numerous books and publications.

Dr. Propes is married to LaQuita Joy, and they have two children: Matthew Thomas and wife, Jennifer; and a daughter, Summer Joy, who went home to be with the Lord in March of 2017. The Propes have two grandchildren, Mark Thomas and William.

For almost 50 years, LaQuita Propes has fulfilled her role in ministry through her husband’s assignments as evangelist, pastor, Administrative Bishop, Departmental Director, and as Secretary General of the Church of God. She was a member of the International Women’s Ministries Board of Directors for eight years. She is an individual who exudes warmth and graciousness. LaQuita once shared with the World Missions staff a touching quote she’d heard by golfer, Bubba Watson, where he stated: “I never got this far in my dreams,” expressing her sentiment at being a part of the World Missions family in her most previous post as World Missions Women's Ministries Coordinator.

LaQuita is a graduate of Georgia Southern University with a degree in Dental Science. She was the recipient of the prestigious Robert I. Phillips Award, which is the award given to the most outstanding dental hygiene student.
